Rideau Hall Welcomes Visitors to a Summer of Culture and Reflection

You’re invited to experience an array of unforgettable summer events at Rideau Hall. From the beloved Relief of the Sentries and classical music concerts in the Royal Grove to engaging literacy and Indigenous art activities, there are plenty of free events to inspire and entertain visitors of all ages.

Located just minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau, and surrounded by beautiful grounds, Rideau Hall is one of Canada’s most cherished national historic sites.

Special Events

Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams Heart Garden

Until September 30, near the Visitor Centre on the Rideau Hall grounds

Rideau Hall is featuring a reconciliation-focused heart garden in tribute to the children affected by the residential school system. Visitors are invited to add their own hearts to the garden, symbolizing our shared commitment to reconciliation. This Heart Garden, presented in partnership with the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society, will be on display until September 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Storytime at Rideau Hall

Every Thursday and Friday until August 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Reading Tent

Young guests at Rideau Hall can enjoy reading books and engaging in fun literacy activities under the Reading Tent, with sessions facilitated by volunteers from United for Literacy.

Chamberfest Concerts

August 3 – 4 (various times) in the Royal Grove

As part of Ottawa Chamberfest’s summer music festival, Rideau Hall will host a series of free concerts to mark the festival’s 30th anniversary. These concerts, held during the August Doors Open weekend, offer visitors the chance to listen to accomplished musicians in a picturesque setting. Seating is limited, so visitors are encouraged to bring picnic blankets.

Doors Open at Rideau Hall

Every long weekend during the summer – August 3-5 and August 31-September 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During summer long weekends, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore the official residence of the Governor General. The Doors Open events allow guests to explore the State rooms at their own pace and see areas usually closed during regular tours, such as the greenhouses and private gardens. Guides will be available to answer questions about Canada’s governor general and the residence’s history.

Ongoing Events

Relief of the Sentries

Every weekend until August 5 – On the hour, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays (Canada Day and the Civic Holiday), the Ceremonial Guard performs the Relief of the Sentries. This ceremonial event features four sentries, led by a bagpiper and two escorts, as they take their posts at Sussex Gate and in front of the residence. Dressed in full scarlet tunics and bearskin caps, the sentries stand guard for an hour.
